10/6/15 The Huskies (4-2) four game win streak was brought to an end Tuesday afternoon when Holmdel defeated Matawan by a 2-0 scoreline. The Huskies conceded two first half goals, and were left chasing the game in the second half. The Huskies played a spirited final thirty minutes in which they dominated possession but were unable to connect to find the back of the net. Kyle Hunter picked up the lone goal in the developmental period when he was first to pounce on a goalkeeper rebound off a Brandon Groh shot just inside the eighteen yard box. The Huskies go back to work today in preparation to host Long Branch on Tuesday, October 13.
Huskies chew Thorne to bits in 7-1 thumping
10/5/15 The Huskies(4-1) won their fourth consecutive game and found their goal scoring prowess as they tallied a resounding 7-1 victory over Thorne. Tom Zalepka got the Huskies off and running when he turned a perfectly placed Giovanni Gallo corner kick into a 1-0 lead. Zalepka doubled the advantage minutes later after a pass from Marcelo Colonna put him into space just outside the eighteen yard box. Matawan took a 3-0 lead into the halftime interval care of a Justin Sumner from Elijah Santos thirty yard break away run that was tucked neatly into the corner of the goal. The Huskies pulled away in the second half, when the strike combo of Gavin Klamm from Tom Zalepka scored two markers in quick succession, extending the Matawan advantge to 5-1. Chris Dietrich pounded a header home from a Giovanni Gallo inswinging set piece to give the Huskies a sixth goal. Gavin Klamm added the final exclamation point completing the hat trick with help from a Sumner square ball. Along with the offense the Huskies received shut down defense from the likes of Ryan Leonard and the platoon efforts of Dylan Frye and Lucas DiGregorio. Mike Mallozzi made four saves to secure the victory. Matawan prepares for a quick turn around as they host Holmdel today.
Huskies dominate possession in 5-1 clubbing of Thorne
10/14/15 It took the Huskies until part way into the second half before they were able to find the back of the net but once they did the offense came fast and furious. Marcelo Colonna got the attack rolling when his shot from just inside the eighteen yard box took a slight deflection and found the corner of the goal. Shortly thereafter it was 2-0, when Giovanni Gallo's cross into the box clattered off the keeper and the crossbar before being poked home by the ever opportunistic Gavin Klamm. Klamm made it 3-0 when he deposited a Ryan Leonard service from the corner, sending the Huskies into a rabid frenzy. 6th grade striker John Contini found Justin Sumner who took the ball on a 45 yard walk, beating five Thorne defenders with with a combination of dribble and speed before slotting it past a giving keeper. Colonna book-ended the offense with his second goal as he received a target pass from Tyler Coco, swiveled on a defender and ripped a shot over and passed the goalie. Mike Mallozzi was solid in goal collecting the win and the Huskies bench provided them with many quality minutes in securing the victory. The Huskies look to stay hot when they travel to face bitter rival, Hazlet.
10/15/15- The Huskies battled back from two separate one goal deficits to outlast rivals Hazlet in a 3-2 thriller. Trailing 1-0 midway through the first half. Justin Sumner found Thomas Arendt just outside the box and from 20 yards out, Arendt hit a blast that beat the Hazlet goalie high near post, leveling the game at one goal apiece. Hazlet snatched back the lead and momentum shortly after the halftime interval making it 2-1. That momentum would be short lived as Tom Zalepka evened the scoreline at 2-2, when he was first to a 50/50 ball inside the six yard box, stabbing it past the keeper at the near post. Gavin Klamm would record the game winner taking a driven cross in from Elijah Santos, settling it in a crowd and having the presence of mind to knee it over an oncoming goalie and into the back of the net, securing a Husky victory. Matawan also dominated the developmental period 3-0, seeing starting goalie turned striker Mike Mallozzi grab a goal and an assist in the extra ten minutes. Mallozzi's helper set up Brandon Groh's first goal of the year and Jason Asare capped the evening when his blast found side netting. Matawan looks to stay red hot as they travel to play front running Neptune today.
Huskies fall 3-2 to Hazlet; finish with a 8-4 record
10/23/15- The Huskies were slow off the mark and found themselves in a 2-0 hole before they knew what hit them, surrendering and early goal and another from a free kick just outside the eighteen yard box. Just before the half, 8th grade striker Gavin Klamm received a target pass, cut back across the defender and slid a timely diagonal ball onto the feet of strike partner Tom Zalepka who calmly slid the ball past the keeper cutting the deficit by one before the half. Hazlet would convert another free kick to pull the advantage back to two goals. The Huskies continued to dominate possession and ask questions of the Hazlet back line. With chances continuing to come, Matawan was awarded a penalty kick after a Hazlet defender hand ball in the box. 8th grade winger, Anthony Peters calmly stepped up and buried the ball in the back of the net. That would be as close as the Huskies would get before finally fall by a 3-2 scoreline. Jason Asare stayed red hot as he scored another goal in the developmental period on a perfectly placed cross from Aaron Reingold, helping the Huskies claim the extra period by a 1-0 mark. The Huskies finish their season with a record of 8-4 and a fourth place finish.
