Matawan 5...Neptune 2
The Lady Huskies started off the 2008 season with a convincing 5-2 victory over Neptune yesterday. Amanda Carmichael opened the scoring at the 10 minute mark with the first of her two goals of the season. She scored 3 minutes later to give Matawan a 2-0 lead. Erica Mojica scored just before the half to increase the Husky lead to 3-0. Neptune jumped out of the gates in the 2nd half and cut the lead to 3-2.The Huskies responded on an unassisted goal by Ashley Beccia, and Erica Mojica later tallied her second goal of the game to seal the victory. Angela Blasco played a strong game in the midfield and collected 3 assists to lead the offensive charge.
Matawan 5...Long Branch 0
The Lady Huskies delighted their fans with a shutout over Long Branch at their home opener at Strathmore Field. Just like the win over Neptune, Amanda Carmichael opened the scoring with her 3rd and 4th goals of the season. Angela Blasco earned her 4th assist on the season on Carmichael's second goal. Three minutes into the 2nd half, Ashley Beccia scored on a feed by Carmichael to make the score 3-0. Erica Mojica later scored her 3rd and 4th goals of the season to seal the victory. Lisa Zahray collected her first assist on Mojica's last goal. The Husky defense was stellar as Olivia Walsh, Karleigh Komski and Amanda Lloyd helped Karen David notch her first shutout of the season.

Holmdel 2...Matawan 1
The Huskies lost a heartbreaker yesterday to Holmdel by a 2-1 score. Amanda Carmichael again opened the scoring by tallying her 5th goal of the season off an assist by Danielle Knox. Unfortunately, Matawan gave the goal back a short time later off a corner kick. The score remained tied until the 59th minute when Holmdel broke through with a goal. Karen David made several key saves as Holmdel pounded the Matawan goal with numerous scoring opportunities. Colleen Branagan, Jennie Drapkin and Emily Bellone continued their strong play in the middle. Ashley Beccia, Angela Blasco, and Karleigh Komski contributed with their relentless effort for Matawan as well. Amanda Lloyd and Olivia Walsh continue to make progress at the outside fullback positions.
Thompson 3...Matawan 0
The Huskies traveled to Middletown to face first place Thompson. Shortly into the game, we understood why Thompson is the top team in our division this season. Matawan was unable to match Thompson's physical play and could not consistently win 50-50 balls. Although the Lady Huskies gave a valiant effort, Thompson controlled all aspects of the game and won 3-0. Ashley Beccia, Karleigh Komski, Amanda Carmichael, Jennie Drapkin, and Lisa Zahray played strong games. Karen David made several saves to keep the score down.
Matawan 4...Bayshore 2
The Mets and Yankees should have been at Strathmore Field yesterday to see how a team plays with heart, determination, and desire. These qualities were absent from our local baseball teams, but the Lady Huskies have these traits as part of their DNA. Facing a 2-0 deficit 40 minutes into the game, Matawan erupted for 4 unaswered goals to shock Bayshore 4-2 and avenge last season's only loss. Amanda Carmichael continued her torrid scoring streak as she scored the first 2 Matawan goals to add to her team leading 7 tallies on the season. Angela Blasco gave the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish on a blast from just inside the 18 yard line. Danielle Knox scored her first Husky goal to give Matawan much needed insurance for their 3rd victory of the season. Jennie Drapkin, Erica Mojica, and Ashley Beccia outworked their Bayshore opponents to inspire the Huskies. Colleen Branagan and Emily Bellone sacrificed their offensive side of the game to shut down Bayshore's top scoring threats. Karleigh Komski led the defensive core of Olivia Walsh and Amanda Lloyd to prevent any Bayshore scoring in the 2nd half. Karen David was once again spectacular in goal. Great Job Huskies!!!
Hazlet 2...Matawan 0
The Huskies traveled to Hazlet Middle School for the first time in five years and were handed their third loss of the season. Matawan had difficulty all afternoon matching up with a strong, balanced Hazlet squad. Nevertheless the girls gave their best efforts once again. Hazlet scored early in both halves to stake a 2-0 lead. Matawan simply couldn't generate any offense and squandered its only real scoring opportunity midway through the second half. Amanda Lloyd and Olivia Walsh continued their progression as solid outside fullbacks and did an outstanding job defending their marks. Ashley Beccia, Amanda Carmichael, Angela Blasco, and Lisa Zahray played solid games. Karen David again proved why she is one of the best goalies in the Shore Conference of Middle Schools with a couple dozen saves.
Matawan 1…Thorne 1
One look at Matawan sweeper Karleigh Komski and you would have thought that she just went three rounds with MMA star Kimbo Slice. Her lip was bloodied; her body was bruised and battered. She was not in a brawl in the octagon, but was a key participant in a battle in the rectangle. Her physical play and disregard for her body inspired the host Huskies to a 1-1 tie with visiting Thorne. In a game that was reminiscent of a rugby match, Matawan went toe-to-toe with the older and bigger Thorne Lions. This team’s grit and gutsy play has been a staple for the Husky program the last 4 years. Amanda Carmichael opened the scoring early in the first half on an assist by Ashley Beccia. Thorne responded with an early goal in the 2nd half. For the remaining 35 minutes, including the 10 minute overtime period, Matawan and Thorne delighted its fans and both teams put on quite a show. Karen David was spectacular again as she stopped several breakaways and made a nifty save on a ball that caromed off the crossbar late in the match. Emily Bellone and Colleen Branagan frustrated Thorne’s top scoring threat all game. Amanda Lloyd and Olivia Walsh displayed their trademark defensive play to preserve the tie.
Matawan 3…Holmdel 3
After Matawan’s previous game which they could only muster one goal, the Huskies rallied three times to eventually tie Holmdel 3-3. Over the past two seasons, each contest between Matawan and Holmdel has resulted in a one goal game or tie. Matawan and Holmdel have a win, loss, and two ties as one of the best rivalries in the Shore Conference of Middle Schools provided another “instant classic”. Amanda Carmichael continued her pursuit of the MAMS single season scoring record as she tallied her 9th and 10th goals of the season. Her second goal was from a perfectly placed corner kick from Angela Blasco, who notched her 5th assist of the season. Erica Mojica, playing with a severely injured left knee, collected her second and third assists of the season. Lisa Zahray tied the game at 3 with only ten minutes remaining to pull Matawan from the brink of defeat and send the game to overtime. Both teams squandered scoring chances in the extra period as the game came to an end.
Matawan 4...Neptune 0
The girls soccer team assured themselves of a winning season as they completely dominated Neptune from the opening whistle and cruised to a 4-0 victory. Amanda Carmichael opened the scoring for the 7th time this season on an assist from Erica Mojica. Ashley Beccia scored just before the half on a blast from outside the 18 as Amanda Lloyd collected her first assist of the season. Shorly into the 2nd half, Amanda Carmichael made MAMS Girls Soccer history as she scored her 12th goal of the season to erase Rebecca Labinger's record from 2007. Emily Bellone notched her 1st MAMS point with the assist. Angela Blasco capped the scoring by reaching the top corner of the goal on a feed from Jennie Drapkin. Erica Mojica and Ashley Beccia completely dominated the middle third of the field as they controlled play and moved the ball nicely to their teammates. Jennie Drapkin, Lisa Zahray, Lyndsey Larsen, Jenna Howley, and Danielle Knox had strong games for the Huskies.
Matawan 7...Long Branch 1
The girls' soccer team closed out the 2008 season as they sent the Green Wave of Long Branch back to sea with a 7-1 victory. Amanda Carmichael cemented her role as one of MAMS most prolific goal scorers as she scored her record-setting 13th and 14th goals of the season. Angela Blasco notched her team-leading 6th and 7th assists of the year. Erica Mojica collected her 5th and 6th goals of the season and Danielle Knox collected her 2nd. This game also provided several "firsts" for the 2008 year. Karen David scored her first goal on a corner kick. Lyndsey Larsen scored her first goal of her MAMS career. Olivia Walsh assisted on Carmichael's first goal to earn her first point of the season. Congratulations girls on a great season!!!
