Game Report '10
Holmdel 3...Matawan 1
The girls soccer team opened its 2010 season with a hard fought loss to Holmdel by the score of 3-1. The Hornets scored first, but Tracey Brereton answered with an assist to Jenna Howley to give MAMS their first goal of the season. For much of the afternoon, Holmdel's forwards kept Matawan's defense busy as they peppered the Matawan goal with numerous shots. Kacey Lambertson played a solid game at fullback for her Matawan debut. Kristi Gambino, Endila Radoncic, and Hannah Nappi played strong defensive games. Samantha Walsh, DoraAnn Marshall, Gabriella Sferrazza, and Carolyn Creamer all made their Husky debuts. Jackie Robinson made several point blank saves; however, the Huskies were unable to tie the score.
Matawan 2...Neptune 1 (2 OT)
The Lady Huskies made the long treck down to exit 100B looking to avenge last year's 1-0 loss to Neptune. Shortly into the second half, Neptune capitalized on a PK to grab the 1-0 lead. Matawan was clearly becoming frustrated as their flurry of shots just missed their mark. As the game wore on, the Huskies dug their cleats into the Neptune sod, and eventually broke through. Kacey Lambertson scored an unassisted goal with about 7 minutes remaining to tie the score. With about 2 minutes left in the 2nd overtime, Lambertson sealed the victory as her shot found the back of the Neptune goal to send Matawan to its first victory! Jaida Allison, Colleen Branagan, Lyndsey Larsen, and Emily Bellone all played strong games up front for the Huskies.
Hazlet 4...Matawan 0
The Huskies dropped a 4-0 decision to Hazlet and fell to 1-2 on the season. As is often the case, you can't question the girls' efforts and hard work on the field. The Lady Huskies stuck to their game plan and went toe to toe with Hazlet for the first 18 minutes. However, several defensive miscues led to three Hazlet goals before the first half. Jena Howley played an impressive game at fullback as she repeatedly stopped Hazlet rushes and was able to generate several offensive opportunities. Lyndsey Larsen played a strong, physical game in the middle and Jaida Allison worked effortlessly to try and generate scoring chances. Jackie Robinson was solid in the net and could not be faulted for any of the four goals allowed. The Huskies will look to rebound vs. Thompson Thursday.
Thompson 1...Matawan 0
The Lady Huskies traveled to Middletown to take on the defending Shore Conference of Middle School two time champions. With a defensive mindset from the start, Matawan held Thompson to a goal through the first half. Colleen Branagan apparently had tied the game, but her goal was waived off due to an offsides. A short time later, Branagan's shot from outside the 18 went just wide. Jenna Howley and Hannah Nappi continued their strong defensive play at fullback and stopper. Emily Bellone did a stellar job playing sweeper and Endila Radoncic worked hard throughout the game as a midfielder. Jackie Robinson made numerous saves to deny Thompson any additional goals.
Thorne 3...Matawan 1
Matawan made their second trip to Middletown in three days to battle Thorne in a game that was originally scheduled to be played at Strathmore. However, the soaking rains that covered the northeast forced the game to be moved. The downpour did not dampen the Lady Huskies' spirit as they found themselves in a tie game as Jenna Howley scored on an assist from Endila Radoncic. As the game wore on, Thorne was able to capitalize on their second corner kick goal and they eventually tallied goal number 3 as Matawan players pushed forward in an attempt to tie the game. Kacey Lambertson and Jaida Allison played strong offensive games for the Huskies. Samantha Walsh played well at the fullback position.
Colts Neck 3...Matawan 0
The undefeated, first place Colts made their maiden journey to Strathmore Field to play the Lady Huskies of Matawan. As Colts Neck controlled play and peppered Matawan's goal, the Huskies continued to play their hearts out. The Lady Huskies again found themselves trailing 1-0 at half for the 4th consecutive game. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the back of the net. Colleen Branagan and Lyndsey Larsen played solid offensive games for Matawan. Emily Bellone and Brittany Kakoleski had nice runs which resulted in scoring chances. Shannon Sansone played a strong game at fullback for Matawan.
Hazlet 2...Matawan 0
The Lady Huskies dropped to 1-6 on the season after losing to Hazlet. For the seventh consecutive game, we found ourselves in a battle at halftime. Unfortunately, Hazlet broke through early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead and added to it at the 50:00 mark with another goal. Colleen Branagan had one of our few scoring chances but her shot went off the goalie's hands then off the crossbar. Jaida Allison recorded two shots on goal. Tracey Brereton played an outstanding game at right fullback.
Matawan 3...Bayshore 2 (OT)
The Lady Huskies notched their second overtime victory this season as Jenna Howley took a feed from Colleen Branagan and drilled it just inside the left post. Matawan had trailed 1-0 at halftime until Lyndsey Larsen scored an unassisted goal from just outside the 18. The Lady Huskies then secured their first lead of the season as Jenna Howley scored her first of two goals to make the score 2-1. Unfortunately, a defensive breakdown led to Bayshore's tying goal with under one minute left to play. However, the Lady Huskies prevailed to win their second game of the season.
Matawan 9...Long Branch 0
The Lady Huskies erupted for six goals in the first half on way to a 9-0 victory over Long Branch to conclude the 2010 season. Jenna Howley started the scoring with her team leading 4th goal of the season. Lyndsey Larsen followed with her first of two goals on the day. Colleen Branagan and Emily Bellone followed suit with a pair of goals. Dora Ann Marshall and Jordan Grillo collected their first goals of the season and Jaida Allison, Branagan, and Howley each collected an assist on the day. Jackie Robinson posted her first shutout of the year.
